austerity really kicking in
two small hatchbacks parked at a bus station. one is a white hatchback with the logo of bus operator CDC Melbourne, and the other is like, orange? and has the logo for Transit Systems. they're used to ferry drivers to/from the depot for breaks without dead heading, but they'd also handle many Melbourne buses off-peak patronage

so looking at the info released about the "big switch" on 1 Feb 2026, and we get 2 quite different headlines from this morning's press release, the big build website/a Jacinta Allan post on twitter at earlier tonight.

is it 6tph Watergardens - Dandenong, or just West Footscray - Dandenong? (1/5)

I don't know why the age didn't bother to include these quotes, but it's good to see my assumptions about ONRSR approvals being the last stumbling block vindicated.

but if the rewriting of the timetables isn't even done yet, you've got to wonder what the hell has been happening the last 4 years

also just to be clear, while I'm having a big whinge today about the lack of info re. metro tunnel timetables, I'm still going to be absolutely fucken ecstatic when it opens. will definitely improve my regular commutes a huge amount.

I just want it to be as good as possible

screenshots of guardian articles about the new tunnels. screenshot reads: "Williams said the “most comprehensive re-timetabling of our network in living memory” was also under way to make way from the tunnel. She said this work made the project different to New South Wales’ Sydney Metro, which opened in August 2024. “The Sydney Metro is effectively a shuttle. The Melbourne Metro tunnel is not,” she said. “It is integrated with the rest of our rail network, which means that when we timetable for the Metro Tunnel, we have to re-timetable virtually our entire rail network and, of course, connecting bus services and the like as well.” Allan said the next step was to get final approvals from the national rail safety regulator. The Sydney Metro opening was delayed for a fortnight after it failed to receive its approvals in time. Allan said “we’ve learned from that” and would announce an opening date in due course. “I appreciate there’s a hunger and eagerness to know the opening date and to know the timetable,” she said.

making my annual pilgrimage to one of the most objectionable road signs in the country, which is also responsible for the one and only time I "went viral" on the other site

putting on my assumption hat: the flurry of media about the metro tunnel this weekend is a sign the government is pretty ready to open the tunnel, but they won't commit to a date until they get ONRSR approvals.

they need to quash this idea of an off-peak only launch immediately though, it is awful
