Did Bluesky have to censor Turkish political commenters?

Of course they did. Any centralized social network works this way and has this vulnerability.

They will have to do it with your political posts too, when the US starts asking them to do it.

I wonder where the limit goes. Can you post about Abdullah Öcalan on bluesky without the Turkish state coming to censor you? I wonder how the experience has been for someone like @b9ace.org that regularly posts about Northern Syria and the resistance against Turkey's invasion.

Bluesky didn't reach a federated stage where you could choose a service provider in a free country before they started to censor people based on authoritarian demands.

Have friends that are going to suffer under Meta's new moderation policies? (Where they specifically allow calling #LGBTQ people mentally ill and will stop fact-checking on their platform). If they're on Instagram, send them over to #Pixelfed - a decentralised not-for-profit alternative.

Try this experiment if you still have an account on a Meta platform: Write something that contains the word #Pixelfed. It's an image-sharing fediverse alternative to Instagram. See what happens. (Likely result: It will be instantaneously banned). Consider that against Meta's new moderation policy.

More or less I tend to think that both Bluesky and the present-day fediverse are caught up in chasing the dreams of social networks built by Millenials, for Millenials, on the hopes and dreams that a "global town square" would work.

How will Bluesky make money? That's the question the company is asking itself. This raises another question - why does social network technologies necessarily have to monetize use? Wikipedia has existed for 23 years now as a non-profit. There's no reason why social media could be the same.

I've followed the Twitter migrations since Musk took over and have looked at the side line on the rise of Bluesky. I am happy that people are moving away from Musk's media machine. For some time, Bluesky will seem to be a good enough replacement for past Twitter. Perhaps even an improvement.
