Thanks for the feedback. Ppl at masto suggested plenty of alternatives to overleaf but at a rather pro level. I also gathered a list of what people use as their local installs. I followed my "local" advice and installed MikTex.

Geographic constraints are tertiary at best when compared to the personal ones. In addition to that, such a cascade poses a critical career risk if at some point a forty-something „postdoc” slips. I’m so happy to have broken out of this dead circle. Also helped our mutual friend achieve the same:)
