Working on my tenure application. Reviewing past results I came across a sweet gem, when a Western, advanced laser company took note of the results which I obtained in lab together with my first PhD student (now a doctor) Anupamaa Rampur. Ehh, sweet times.

Menlo Systems Laser Drives Low-Noise Thulium Amplifier
Researchers in Warsaw and Bern used Menlo Systems’ C-Fiber 780 laser to seed a thulium amplifier, generating stable 96-fs pulses at 1900 nm.

I’ve been reading a popular science monthly magazine DELTA. It has been run since 1974 by University of Warsaw. Delta traditionally covers maths, physics and astronomy. It is in Polish, but OA and getting it translated shouldn’t be a problem;-)

Looks preliminary to say the least, I know, but to me it's beautiful. After trying hard for some time, we learned to take proper polarization resolved measurements of nonlinear optical response of our epitaxial BN films 8-)

Our paper on diamond–silica interfaces under localized laser vitrification got published.
We show how heat-driven diamond decomposition and altering of the silica. Context: distributed optical magnetometry, Kerr nonlinearity shaping.

Last night the Polish airspace was violated by a huge number of Russian drones. Those drones that posed a direct threat were shot down. I am in constant communication with the Secretary General of NATO and our allies.

The Russian attack on Kyiv’s government buildings shows again that the continued delaying a strong reaction against Putin and the attempts to appease him makes no sense. The US and Europe must together force Russia to accept an immediate ceasefire. We have all the instruments.

Hoping that a new paper would be a good come-back:
opg.optica.org/oe/fulltext....
It’s about nano-diamonds and detecting small magnetic fields with light. The diamonds are inside an optical fiber. You could imagine placing it at a harbor entrance to detect hostile submerged drones.

As CLEO Europe have emailed their abstract notifications to contributors, it looks like I would be getting an opportunity to see/meet some of you in person this June ;-)

To all the latex pros out there: what would be your recommended alternative to overleaf? „None” would also be a feedback, I could pull some overheads for the subscription, as long as my project lasts.

Believe it or not, my CLEO Europe submission done last week was the first meaningful doc I prepared entirely in latex (overleaf). It is better late than never, but in my case it is also a sign of being a PI in a true sense, ie „nobody” is going to tell me not to because they are used to ms word.

The words we heard from the main actors of the AfD rally about “Great Germany” and “the need to forget German guilt for Nazi crimes” sounded all too familiar and ominous. Especially only hours before the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

Single-slit experiment at home for my fifth-grader. I know this could be generally improved, but this is what comes out with a rough setting up of two razor blades with a masking tape, a ruler and some lego. Must admit that the camera shows this much better than my actual vision.

A function taking y=1 for rational x and y=-1 for irrational x is discontinuous for every x. If you tried to plot it, it would look like two line-thin clouds of points at y equals either 1 or -1. I cannot shake this off tonight 🤔
