This book is a picture book about peaceful ways to fight for equal rights. It’s a great lap book- one to read and discuss with kids on your lap or next to you. Great pictures that celebrate diversity. A must have for those of us who care about the world we live in.

I’ve been sharing this picture book on democracy page by page. It would be a great one for any child’s library. As a teacher I would challenge the students to make their own with what democracy means to them.

Today’s book is simply called Rosa. It’s a beautifully illustrated picture book about Rosa Parks and her contribution to the Civil Rights Movement, her fight for diversity, equity, and inclusion even though those words weren’t used then. Appropriate for all ages.

The Watson’s Go to Birmingham is a great read for fifth grade and up. It’s a story about a family from Detroit visiting relatives in the south. While they’re there the 16th Street Baptist church is bombed. Deals with feelings in times of despair. Sound familiar?

For today I’ll review a children’s chapter book called Jacob’s Rescue. It follows the story of a young Polish Jewish boy being rescued by Christians from the Warsaw ghetto right before the uprising. Based on a true event and even includes photographs. Appropriate for fifth grade and up.
