Can't believe it's 35 years since 22 December 1989, the date of the Romanian Revolution (according to some, a coup also took place, but the results are the same - the dictator, Ceaușescu, fled). For me, the sound of the revolution, besides the dry cracks of Kalashnikovs fired in the city centre /1

A great adaptation of my favourite Dickens novel
Less than half an hour till the third and final episode of Our Mutual Friend which (a) I've adapted from Dickens and (b) is excellent in all respects. BBC Radio 4, 3pm. That's where you want to be. Yes it is.

The cover for the original French edition of Georges Simenon's Maigret à l'école (Maigret goes to school), 1954. Nice, simple design, letting the reader immediately know it's what they want, given the commissaire's cult following

Piftie or răcitură. Amazing, even if a bit of an acquired taste. Best with some paprika on top. A lighter one is made of turkey meat
We're off to Romania 🇹🇩 for day 17 of #ChemAdvent!

Piftie is a traditional Romanian Christmas dish: Meat, garlic and vegetables encased in a meat jelly.

George Nicholls said to us all
As he went to a fancy dress ball:
“No way am I faking,
I’m going as bacon”
And a dog ate him up in the hall.
For Halloween, one of my favourite fancy dress costumes in history

George J. Nicholls going to Covent Garden ball dressed as a side of bacon (1894). He later published a book, ‘Bacon & Hams'

I guess he just loved bacon 🥓🥓🥓 🗃️🎃
