In his new piece--which is largely about the reaction to his last piece--Ezra Klein says that he is deeply shaken by Charlie Kirk's murder essentially because they were in the same business: They both did public politics. This is honest on his part. It's also the problem. >

I will never forgive the people who voted for this monster and I will never forgive the people who sat out the election because “both sides are the same.” This is on you.

And if there’s anyone Democrats should turn to for political advice it’s definitely the NYT editorial board
Amazing to see how much it’s a settled assumption—not even worth questioning—that public opinion is a static exogenous force that politicians must optimize around.

P.S. Nothing is "relevant" to everyone. Nothing is "relevant" to MOST people. Nothing attracts a majority of American interest. Relevance is an absurd, completely subjective marker of the value of any cultural product and chasing it is a fool's errand.

There is a Republicans whose district is entirely within NYC (incl parts of Brooklyn) & 3 more in Greater NYC districts easily reached from NYC by public transit.

These people are assholes.

So if mainstream media doesn't want to keep being accused by its own readership of being lickspittles who toady to whoever's in power, maybe it's time for THEM to stop "reeling" and pivot from winners/losers coverage of whose muscles are bigger, and focus on what's at stake. End of Saturday rant. x

I've heard a number of people say, "I live in a safe blue district/state--there's no point in calling my reps since they're already on the right side." Yes, there is: You can call and insist that they be among the loudest voices on the issues you care about, since they can afford to be.

Only thing I'll say is: the reason these people think what they think is that they are wrapped in a seamless bubble of RW media, from cable TV to radio to social media.

When things to not go as they envision, that same bubble will ensure that they do not blame Trump.

At the same time, so much collective action failure right now: billionaire licking Trump's boots, some Ds trying to look "reasonable," others focused on intra-party factional goals, media quiescent and trying not to be persecuted. Shocking how pliable everyone is compared to December 2016.
It's remarkable how quiescent Democrats are - Trump is poised to inspire a major thermostatic backlash, midterms are now more favorable to D coalition, and Trump becoming a lame duck will soon inspire chaotic jockeying to replace him. The question is whether anyone is as savvy as McConnell in 2009.

The problem with pieces like this, which are countless, is the prevailing media assumption that left-of-center Americans need constant corrective instruction about how to be in and engage with the world, whereas right-of-center Americans are simply to be observed in awe, like rainbows or mountains.
Opinion - The problem with Bluesky: It won’t broaden our horizons: In the wake of Donald Trump’s election win, the social-media platform has enjoyed a surge of new users looking for an alternative to Elon Musk’s X. But will it be useful, if it just creates an echo chamber for the left?
