I explore cyanobacterial photosynthesis with protein engineering, biochemistry & spectroscopy. I am exCSO at Kelp Blue unlocking the biotech potential of seaweed, and before, I built biophysics in S.Africa | MSc Biotech | PhD Biol | MSCA fellow | he/him
It’s the first time I’ve attended a conference where bags of human urine and feces so often take center stage. Quite a departure from the photosynthesis we discussed on day one. If we want to conquer space and Mars these are the challenges, but also the opportunities and solutions.

The habitat for the next manned Moon mission looks, to me, surprisingly similar to the wagons that pioneers and colonizers once used in places like America and South Africa. At first glance, not much seems to have changed since the 19th century — but the technology behind it today is truly exciting!

Good to be in beautiful Granada, Spain, for the 2025 MELiSSA Conference. I’ll be speaking about how photosynthesis research can help us get more out of each solar photon. Looking forward to getting to know this community!

Very happy to contribute to a review of the basic principles & measurement of the light reactions of photosynthesis with a focus on greenhouse/crop studies - it might be useful for newcomers to the field. Not open access, sorry ($$) - so please DM requests for the PDF.
The light reactions of photosynthesis: Monitoring pathways, energy and photoprotection in greenhouse and crop studies | CABI Reviews
Abstract Photosynthesis by plants, algae and cyanobacteria uses energy from light to capture atmospheric CO2 and synthesise carbohydrates. The biochemistry of the light-dependent reactions of photosyn...

It's a good week for rubisco enthusiasts - very cool preprint from Ron Milo lab www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... impressive screening of +250 genes spanning available diversity of rubisco, this then used to predict activities of 68,000 known sequences revealing role of phylogeny and habitat
Rubisco is slow across the tree of life
Rubisco is the main gateway through which inorganic carbon enters the biosphere, catalyzing the vast majority of carbon fixation on Earth. This pivotal enzyme has long been observed to be kinetically ...

Thanks for having me! It was a lot of fun and I hope it was useful for the audience. It was great to have a chance to talk with people at different stages of their careers in research, either in or outside the academic setting.
Now, it's time for the panel "Testimonials by Researchers," moderated by Dr. Zoi Melissari, where current and former researchers will share their experiences! 🔬

I took my Bluesky cover photo from a plane over #Lüderitz, #Namibia — a place where the desert meats the ocean. Believe me or not, there is ~30 ha of forest in that picture! The „trees” in that forest grow up to a 0.5 m a day and do not need fresh water or agricultural land for that! #kelp #seaweed
