On the NIDS page I urge you to scroll down and check out the historical data graph.

They've had two multi-year droughts in the last 20 years and I seem to recall one of them they were talking about if they'd need to shut off water to residents.

I think it's fair for them to be concerned.

It's a problem that's been going on for decades (I first recall hearing about a bad Georgia drought in the 2000s) and it's getting more frequent too.

And I'd say that's a simplistic take.

Yes the southeast gets more rain than the west, but they experience drought too, sometimes for years.
They get more rain, but all their native plants and crops require more rain too.

The SE is currently in a drought.
