AI videos (and images) are soulless hallucinated nightmares. One cannot prompt engineer a work of art. The novelty is seductive leading to gimmicks that I hope will soon expire. The hopeful view usually needs the long bend of the sweeping arc of history, with 3D cinema a pleasing exception.

yes yes yes. The food web described (sulfur-eating microbes, small flies, solitary spiders changing to a colony life style) sounds simple and fascinating.

Language is a potent carrier of meaning and reasoning relative to world models. Ferocious mimicry of language suggests meaning and up to a point is coherent due to the expressive power of language. Up to that point there is use for LLMs. Nonetheless hey do not know their arse from their elbow.

Holy wow, +3.5 ppm CO₂ last year, up from +2.4 ppm average the past decade, and +0.6 ppm in the 1960s.

It gets scarier the closer you look at it. All this is a stress test for the planet, and it's buckling.

Two big reasons for the massive increase: wildfires, and the ocean sinks are shutting down.

How much pesticide ends up in my wormery, does it harm them and if so am I breeding pesticide-resistant worms?

'The Long Corridor, Palazzo della Ragione, Padua.' (c1970) Peter Kelly's painting shows the classical draughtsmanship that characterises much of his work. His liking of a limited palette occasionally warmed by brighter accents is reminiscent of the Dutch Scandinavian Schools.

LLMs - ferocious mimicry without understanding. Useful in some places where control will naturally be exercised, woefully inappropriate elsewhere while producing a huge carbon footprint.
