D'angelo taught me so much. I remember digging into Voodoo as a kid who was into the roots and common and all these soulquarians-adjacent groups and it was the coolest shit ever. Then I remember being in college when Black Messiah dropped and once again thinking it was the absolute coolest shit ever

I'm hearing a lot of "Jews in New York are scared" today. So, a couple of thoughts: 1) Jews should be angry, not scared. We were targeted with a relentless, heavily funded barrage of lies playing off of real fears of antisemitism by a man who came within 7 points of winning. That reeks of contempt.>

Stopped by the incredible New Standards/Jazz w.o Patriarchy Project exhibit at Arena Stage. Wish I took more photos. There's some great art (visual, multimedia), an amazing collage of photos, preview of an upcoming film(?) by Terri Lyne Carrington on Geri Allen and Mary Lou Williams. Check it out!
"What would jazz sound like in a culture without patriarchy? And performed on a stage without bias and taught in an environment of radical inclusion? The jazz without patriarchy project strives to lead a massive cultural shift towards gender equity in the jazz field. Recognizing that the potential of the unique American art form will only be realized when fairness and inclusion are guiding principles. New standards celebrates women composers and artists spanning 100 years - many of whom have been left out of the canon or did not have opportunity to develop and express their talent due to oppressive and biased systems. At its core, New Standards is corrective work that asks us to consider what jazz would sound like if women knowledge producers have equitable representation in creating what we consider "standard." Within this exhibit, the artists explore the sound, look and feel of jazz without patriarchy at the intersection of history, corrective work, gender, race, and innovation.
