It's a wide frame of a nighttime sea-line draped in fog On the early end of that spectrum was The Fog, a campfire delight about supernatural pirates preying on the small town of Antonio Bay to seek their revenge over gold that was stolen hundreds of years ago. It sounds silly when the plot is laid out, but the eerie macabre of Carpenter’s ghost story hums along with an elegance that is equally startling and beautifully composed. It is the rare film of his that is without a central character, or group, and instead opts for a characterization of the prevailing legend of Antonio Bay as an aesthetic trap that ensnares those who call this place home. The mise-en-scene is luxuriant, dappled in shadows, and with a sharp variance between the wide frames. Perhaps most importantly, the schlocky story is powered by the decisions of form, rather than the aesthetic being handcuffed to narrative exposition. Cinematographer Dean Cundey, argued that The Fog became literary, and timeless, because of its images, not its words. Many modern horror films could learn something from such an ethos. Curiously, through the image, Carpenter and his crew do pay tribute to the inherent power of a good ghost story. The film even begins with an Edgar Allan Poe quote “Is all that we see or seem but a dream within a dream?”, and a dusty old campfire prologue, but whatever might be thought of as old fashioned fades into the ambience of Carpenter’s careful, and haunted imagery of a quiet town that will have to inevitably face whatever is coming.

Miss Major Griffin-Gracy passed away today according to the House of GG. She was a veteran of the Stonewall rebellion and a lifelong organizer for the safety and dignity of trans people, sex workers, and the incarcerated. She came from the same generation and milieu as Marsha and Sylvia. She was 78.

I also have advice. Everybody loves reading advice on the computer, so I'll share it: the best thing you can do right now is log off as hard as you can. Go outside, talk to people in real life where it's actually kind of rude to talk about the news, try to actually see the friends you usually just text message. Go for a long drive and turn the phone off while you do it. Get back into your hobbies or pick one and learn it for a while. Watch one of those studio movies that reviews called "wildly miscalculated" and you haven't seen since high school. Play an album you like but find embarrassing. Go to free community events even if they sound stupid. If you take the freeway, try the surface streets. Go to a bad diner and just order some bad coffee because even bad coffee is good coffee. You can't help anybody when you're exhausted and keep posting one million college-educated rewordings of "I would love to be dead right now" on the computer. Walk away from the thing and try out some of those normal things you hear about and if you get bored that's wonderful because we're not supposed to get bored anymore. It turns out boredom is the Cadillac of feelings.
