Parents seem truly surprised when I ask if their sick kid(s) got a flu shot this yea. Most seem unaware, and some disinterested, when I say that it's available and helpful for kids > 6 mo.😫

😷The real scandal isn’t masks - it’s how many people need them and are denied cultural permission to use them without ridicule.

It shows a culture deeply rooted in ableism. Disabled people had reinforced (again) that adaptions are not normalised, they are stigmatised. /13

The man in front of me
looked at my mask
and asked: “you sick?”
I replied: “No.”
And then he stated:
“I can’t imagine wearing a mask
unless I’m sick,”
and though I wanted to say
“I can imagine getting sick
so I’m wearing one,”
instead I just said:
“the cashier’s ready for you.”

Suggestions on what to do to reduce our risk when public health fails, again, to anticipate the inevitable while our governments sit on their hands instead of raising standards for indoor air quality in schools and other crowded public buildings:

It’s #WorldVentil8Day! 🌬️

Clean indoor air is a fundamental pillar of school safety.

Effective ventilation drastically reduces the spread of airborne illnesses (flu, RSV, COVID) and is crucial for maintaining healthy Ontario classrooms.

The meeting began
with an icebreaker:
“which of your skills
would be most useful
if you found yourself
sent back in time
to the Middle Ages?”
and as I looked around
at all the unmasked faces
I was tempted to say:
I know how to
avoid the plague,
but instead I just said:
I can knit.

I saw a young couple
out for a walk,
on his face
a mask,
and on her arm
a tote bag
the side of which read:
“the world is a better place
with you in it,”
and as this half-masked couple
passed by, it occurred to me
that one of them
carried a sentiment
and the other embodied it.

Elderly family member went, masked, to visit a friend in hospital. Friend and roommate were being moved and room cleaned. Family member asked charge nurse "does he have COVID"? Nurse said "no, but his roommate does". Then"but I probably shouldn't have told you that".

that clearly many things
are happening at the CDC,
though unfortunately
controlling diseases
doesn’t seem to be one of them.

If the lack of data
makes it difficult for you to know
exactly how bad
the current Covid wave is,
just look at the newspaper
of record’s recent headline:
“Covid is spreading again
this summer,”
and remember
if they have to admit
the virus isn’t gone
this wave must be pretty bad.

I asked a religious friend
(who has more patience than I)
how she manages
to maintain her peace
when she encounters
ostensible friends and allies
who are dismissive of this virus
and she told me
that she prays,
she prays they will never
have to discover
how very wrong they are.
