Check out this Meteorology Matters Poscast: Hurricane Katrina wasn’t just a storm but rather the infancy of disaster capitalism in America. New Orleans became a testing ground for gentrification, housing inequality #HurricaneKatrina #NewOrleans #Gentrification #HousingCrisis #DisasterCapitalism

Hurricane Katrina and the devastating fallout revealed flaws in FEMA's ability to manage natural disasters. 20 years later, Trump + Noem are leading us to another Katrina-level disaster.

Twenty years ago today, Hurricane Katrina (2005) made landfall in Louisiana.

Four years ago today, Hurricane Ida (2021) made landfall in Louisiana.

This animation shows Katrina on the left and Ida on the right over the same 24-hour period using NOAA Merged IR (left) and NOAA ABI Band 13 (right).

REAL QUESTION TO APPLY FOR METEOROLOGIST JOB @NWS How would you help advance the President's Executive Orders and policy priorities in this role?
Identify one or two relevant Executive Orders or policy initiatives that are significant to you, and explain how you would help implement them if hired

Considering that two historic storms capable of overtopping the levee system have already hit the city, and climate change makes the strongest hurricanes stronger and raises sea levels, it’s a matter of time before New Orleans sees the “Big One” that will overtop the city’s levees. What then?
What happens to New Orleans’ levees when a Category 4 hurricane hits? » Yale Climate Connections
The city’s $23 billion levee system is only rated to withstand a Category 3.

Here's a wind swath for Hurricane #Katrina generated from a parametric model I coded up. Wind speed reduction over land is a generous 30% (the reduction is usually more, but south Florida and south Louisiana offer exceptions).

Absolutely not.

We are not doing this.

Hard decline.

Firm no.

Not a fucking chance.

This is Nazi shit and we don’t do Nazi shit in America.
They're openly calling to lock up every trans person by force. We need every ally to speak out forcefully against this because trans folks cannot do this on our own.

The National Weather Service is hiring 450 meteorologists after Trump-era cuts — but now applicants are being asked weak small pee pee political loyalty-style questions. Should science agencies ever require pledges to a president just to forecast the weather? 🌪️🌊🔥 Would this discourage you?

Look at that forecast track improvement over the last 20 years for Hurricane Katrina #hurricanekatrina
For the upcoming 20th anniversary of Hurricane #Katrina, I created a track forecast cone comparison for three days before its infamous Louisiana landfall. The purple cone is the actual cone centered on the forecast from 2005 and the green cone shows a hypothetical forecast made in 2025.

More NOAA budget cuts means research labs would be shutting down including AOML in Miami, which is a key laboratory for hurricane research in order to help improve forecasts.

IDEAS now ILLEGAL in the USA:
U.S. Immigration and Customs officially tweeted that it was their job to stop illegal people, money, products, and IDEAS from crossing the border.
