Nightingale developments are pretty much the gold standard and do everything the most ardent NIMBY claim they want — non-profit developer, architecturally designed, portion for social housing, climate conscious, communal spaces.
1/ 🚨 The Labor Allan Government envisions Victoria as the Townhouse Capital of Australia—but Merri-bek Labor didn’t get the memo.

Along with Sue Bolton, they’re seemingly pushing Victoria towards unaffordable housing and car dependency. Here’s what’s happening: 🧵👇

Just had a thought: the difference between a "food desert" and a "car dependent neighborhood" is the income of the residents.

Both are food deserts (there are no supermarkets, etc) one just has enough ppl with cars for it to not matter.

I've just arrived in Taipei and wow, so impressed with transit, how family friendly infrastructure is, and how generally pleasing the varied and eclectic buildings are.

This visa policy will also be terrible for 🏡🏡housing in NZ and for New Zealanders - especially those based in popular areas/tourism hubs, already out priced and pushed out by Airbnb.

We need real investment from this government, not policy putting more pressure on housing.
So wait, tourists can come and work for foreign employers, not pay any taxes, use our infra and this is nacts growth policy?

Is Willis on crack?

This is an utter irrelevance

Every NZ friend (or stranger) that I have met in Australia admits they wished they had moved sooner. Better jobs, wages & quality of life higher, cost of living lower (mostly) and, unprompted, ppl mention the 12.5% employer cont.

NZ needs serious policy responses to boost the reasons to stay.

Wow. This article.

“…people sleep in doorways and alleys… & undeveloped public housing projects rot away... Every concession that NZ has made to the profits of private landlords pushed Scarlett Pavlovich into Gaiman’s arms. She had nowhere else to go. None of the women like her do.”
"Auckland is not just the place where these things happen to have occurred: this is _a story about Auckland_."

We interrupt our summer break to bring you this important piece by Emmy Rakete on Neil Gaiman and the political economy of rape.

The interactions between Gaiman, Palmer, Pavlovich, and the couple’s young child are all outlined in Shapiro’s article. There is, though, another figure in the narrative whom the article does not name...

This puts it well & it’s a point I keep making about why using AI to write is so flattening. Writing is the process of working out & refining what you think. If I write an article, I’m not just generating 1000 plausible words. I’m trying to articulate ideas with precision, & challenging myself.
AI is for people who don't want to or can't think. Period.

I write to figure out what I think and how to think about it better.
Today I opened up Word and now on every freaking line there is an icon for Microsoft's Copilot AI tool, always asking me to use it to write. WTF. After googling, it appears IMPOSSIBLE to remove. I cannot use Word with an AI tool. I'm a professional fucking writer. I don't want it inserting shit.

After two months ish working remote and travelling around Australian cities (great time!), I'm planning the next leg through SE Asia. 🌏

I forgot how much effort travel planning takes, and short notice stress /$$ (the first leg was planned slowly over many months, well before I left Ao/NZ). 😅

Last night I had a deep & insightful convo about Te Tiriti, the Voice, colonisation and NZ/Aus histories with a retired white Aussie couple.
It began with Hana-Rāwhiti Maipi-Clark's haka.

Our histories are different, but intertwined. There's a lot to share and learn together.
