Pre-2015, the categorical journalistic aversion to sensationalism was not just warranted and wise but required by the ethos of the profession. But journalists were also required—more than anyone else—to register that, beginning in June 2015, America entered a new era that required new sensitivities.

When objectively sensational events are happening daily, all journalists must be sensationalists—attentive to what's happening, the fact that it's sensational, and the fact that the sensational can't be treated as commonplace. Today's nonsensationalist journalists are categorically *underreporting*.
