Public health specialist in Milwaukee who has varied and random interests. Perhaps clever, but mostly bumming other people's cleverness with RTs. She/they
Absolutely love watching an unmarked Milwaukee Police car use their lights to run a red light! My favorite thing is seeing my tax dollars pay someone to do something that they would ticket me for also doing. Outstanding behavior #MilwaukeePD, we love to see it

A worthwhile thread to go all the way through
One thing I am realizing about this administration-- not just Trump, but his underlings-- is that they all think running the country is functionally the same as being able to have everything they want, all at once, immediately.

There is no strategy, just naked expectation of instant gratification.

And remember, the reason he wanted separate vaccines wasn't due to any science, but because *he'd filed a patent application for a single measles vaccine*. It was just grifting.

Aside from all the other reasons I won't be mourning Charlie Kirk (note: this is not the same as taking glee from political violence), it's difficult to feel bad about a situation when the person affected actively advocated for more of that exact situation. Like idk what else you wanted man 🤷‍♀️

they just decide what they think we’re like and proceed as though

Charlie Kirk's political and social opinions are hateful garbage. And he has the same right as anyone else to express them without fear of being shot. Political violence suppresses all free speech, not just the stuff we agree with.

He also comes uncomfortably close to endorsing a genetic explanation for poverty reduction.

The simple fact is that America's most effective anti-poverty strategy is Social Security, a program that gives unrestricted lump sum payments to old people. No culture change necessary!

This is a common conservative trope: Giving money to poor people isn't enough, we need to focus on "cultural values" like hard work and marriage.

The problem is that red states have been doing that for decades and it doesn't work! Telling people that jobs are good doesn't help if there's no jobs.

I like to listen to articles when available. I heard Brooks "cite" three studies that support his claim that "money doesn't actually help". Curious, I scrolled through the article to find links. Surely this article by such a prominent New York Times columnist was well supported!
In @nytopinion.nytimes.com

“I’ve been driven away from the right over the past decade, but I can’t join the left because I just don’t think that tradition of thought grasps reality in all its fullness,” our columnist David Brooks writes.

Also that they hate institutions of education, but still rely on the credentialism…
Something that I have been thinking about with attribution of "PhD level intelligence" or "PhD level expertise" to a machine is that it reflects an increasing trend among these AI bros and their sycophants to want the products of highly skilled training without actually doing any of the work.

My unpopular opinion: in emergencies, power should be kept working on a hierarchy with residents at the top, essential agencies/orgs next, and going from there.

In any black out warning, data centers should be required to shut the f down to immediately free up grid space for more important users

The crazy thing is that Trump was instrumental to this happening. He signed Operation Warp Speed in May 2020. The mRNA vaccines had 20-30 years of proof of concept & safety data, they were stuck at the point of needing large # in trials. Covid was the opportunity, OWS streamlined things and gave $$$
The joy we felt when after hearing repeatedly to not expect anything sooner than 18 months when we were told they'd be rolling something out before the end of the year. The absolute testament to the power and ingenuity of the American system of science. Moon landing level stuff, and now erased.
I got a flu booster today and it made me reflect on the sense of national accomplishment I felt when I drove to a public facility, waited in my car until my number was called on an app, and got my first covid jab. It's fucked the right gets to erase what a moment of technological liberation that was

My YouTube app started showing me a floating ad, in the corner of the playing video itself. So the embedded ad plays, I hit skip, and then a box is in the bottom left: an ad for the same thing I just dismissed. And I have to MANUALLY DISMISS THE FLOATING AD. I almost deleted YT right then.

"And then we go to war with California."

San Diego is not having it. Love to see it.

By coincidence, earlier today I was listening to the ep of the Conspirituality pod where they talked about how fascists (and cops) don't actually want a fair fight. If you outnumber them, they often run away.

I'm with @mollyjongfast.bsky.social on this one: the Dems better get the wake up call and people need to finally retire.

The article mentions the many old Dems clinging to office and leadership s, let's not overlook the Rs:
McConnell-83
Jim Justice-freshman senator at 73

I want better transit and safer bike/ ped options because I hate driving & think it's a very stupid activity.

Me, when driving: why is this my job? Why isn't someone who's much more trained than me doing this so I can just read a book or scroll my phone?

Nothing wrong with selfish motivations imo
my sinister agenda was for the kids to be able to walk/roll safely and independently to school so I can have more time with a peaceful cup of coffee.
