What Robert Redford contributed to American films via Sundance is genuinely immeasurable. He was also an extraordinarily talented director--Ordinary People and Quiz Show are two of the best American studio movies of their eras--and an actor who somehow wore his incredible charisma almost shyly. RIP.

Richard is a truly brilliant critic and I want to read his writing forever.

Our whole timeline has been nothing but journalists, critics and culture writers announcing their own layoffs and I'm literally sickened by the thought of what will happen to society when all of their work will be taken over by Clippy

This is such a terrible decision. I agree with absolutely everything Adam says below. These are three of the best writers around.

Those aren’t reviews. Those are opinions, and they have their place and uses, but they do not substitute for deeply informed and engaging critical writing, which is a skill that takes time, practice, and experience to develop.
Life changes. Organisms/organizations need to adapt. I'm sure people go to crowdsourced info for reviews, like Goodreads, just like Yelp and others for restaurant reviews.

I really love this movie and I’m so proud to be part of it. Everett Blunck (playing Griffin) is so naturally talented, just brilliant, and truly, I loved everyone involved. In theaters (!!) August 29th! #GriffinInSummer www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie...

Everett Blunck and Abby Ryder Fortson also star in the coming-of-age feature from writer-director Nicholas Colia that hits theaters this year from Vertical.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner and the Other Side of the Climb
The actor, most remembered for playing Theo Huxtable on ‘The Cosby Show,’ passed away Sunday. But his legacy spans much more than one character.

The Hughes Fire burned 10,000 acres in less than 24 hours, expanding 50 times in size—from 100 to 5,000 acres—and putting more than 30,000 people under mandatory evacuation orders, including 4,700 incarcerated people who were ordered to shelter in place in their prison complex.

Firefighters are beating the Palisades and Eaton fires—but fresh ones have already burned 10,000 acres.

Please see Hard Truths even though it was SOMEHOW nominated for nothing today. It’s so incredibly good, and so funny, until you realise you stopped laughing and started crying but can’t quite pinpoint when. The entire cast is wonderful (put Michele Austin in everything, please. & Tuwaine Barrett?!)

In 50 years or even 5, people who regard Nickel Boys as a masterpiece won’t have any idea how it performed at the box office or how many nominations it got. I may have to remind myself of that a few times this week.
The Movie That Haunted Me More Than Any Other This Year
This Oscar contender makes a radical choice—for a very good reason.

Such sad news about David Lynch. The greatest of the greats. At the age of 14 I rented his films from our local video store over and over again. I still remember that buzzy, electric feeling of being inspired to the depths of my soul and feeling like anything was possible if these films existed.

Thank you to everyone checking in. We remain on high alert, this is far from over, but I am filled with gratitude to be able to say that right now, we are ok. So many people we love have lost everything. It’s impossible to comprehend. The devastation is unbearable.

Donut jumped up on the counter and tapped the speaker on, and it started playing the Paul Young song Everytime You Go Away (you take a piece of me with you). He was in fact left alone for like two hours today. Is this kitten a creepy genius

This morning I cooked while my daughter sang a beautiful rendition of Pink Pony Club and Jason accompanied her on the cat piano (plays meows in the note you hit). I’m thankful for these two

After the Party review – hands down the best acting on TV all year
Peter Mullan is perfectly cast and Robyn Malcolm delivers the performance of 2024 in this dark, provocative drama about a woman who accuses her husband of a sex act with a minor
