I feel about cLOUDS what I feel about Cole in general: I’m almost always impressed by Cole’s music, but I rarely FEEL it.

There’s a difference between being great in a lane that I like but don’t love, and not matching the lane u define for yourself. And Cole sometimes slips into that 2nd group.

FD Signifier has started a convo on YT about whether Kdot’s halftime show, or mass-consumed black art in general, can be revolutionary. And he linked to the article below. Directionally, I agree with a lot of what the article says. Yet it falls into the trap of speaking in absolutes and binaries.
Kendrick Lamar, Capitalism & the Struggle for African Liberation - Hood Communist
Kendrick Lamar’s art sparks debate, but can individual success under capitalism ever advance African liberation?

I’m not jumping on the “now
Mahomes will never be the goat” train. But, Mahomes’ aura came from going down double digits in the playoffs and still winning, and being down in the fourth quarter and still winning. Which made people talk about him like he was invincible and unshakeable in big games,

A new theory to me - that when a profession or pursuit becomes equally women, men stop doing it. Bio majors, interior design, teaching, and now (maybe) college. Made me think, is there an example of a profession that is majority female that MEN on avg consider prestigious? UI/UX design?
Why aren't we talking about the real reason male college enrollment is dropping?
We would rather talk about literally everything else.

Pantheon S1 was fun. S2 has been haunting me ever since I finished it. I’ve been chasing the dragon in sci-fi since I was a kid — finally caught the high where I least expected it.

Seems wrong that you can’t find the 2nd season anywhere but bootlegged on YT. At least S1 is on Netflix

I find provocative the idea that “philosophy makes no progress”, but as a feature, not a bug. It has to “keep trying to return to the beginning” bc it is always of a specific time and place. It is like grammar (of thought), improving not in an absolute sense, but in its fitness for the moment.
It's world philosophy day, so post your favorite thing about philosophy.

Mine is that philosophy has never had disciplinary boundaries. Every other field has always been within our purview. Anyone who tells you different has to ignore millennia of examples.

Appreciate this may not be a universally popular opinion but the less you treat BlueSky as a crusade or cause, and the more you position it as simply a superior user experience with a better governance approach, the more sustainable the growth will be.

One thing I think people talking about the threat of authoritarian creep have gotten, if not exactly wrong, not quite right either is to frame discussion in terms of various European precedents.

Those are relevant to be sure, but we also have an American precedent - namely the South before 1965.

I always thought of neural networks as a 2010’s thing, not a 1950’s thing. This was a nice history lesson on how old tech converged with new trends, climaxing in 2012 (when I apparently noticed), and gave birth to the hype we see today: LLMs, self-driving cars, etc etc
Why the deep learning boom caught almost everyone by surprise

Stories like this remind me that everyone likes affirmative action and subsidies when it helps their self-interest (even Elon!). How would ed policy funneling $$ to public schools with the worst outcomes for boys be received by rural men, progressive women, and black ppl? We all got sons, right?
NEW: Private schools across the South that were established for white children during desegregation are now benefiting from tens of millions in taxpayer dollars flowing from rapidly expanding voucher-style programs, a @propublica analysis found.
