Working in governance and equality, living in Yorkshire, love astronomy and murmurations
Yesterday I attended a tea party for a 70th wedding anniversary. In a world with so much sorrow it was special to celebrate this lovely couple, their family and a long life together. I haven’t stopped smiling since.

So David Lammy has been driven from the FCDO round the corner to Downing Street instead of walking up the steps at the back of the FCDO and entering at the street the other way. A DPM getting in a car to go a short distance …. #dejavue

on Monday afternoon, I took a parcel to the post office with a tracked label to go to a business less than 5 miles away. It arrived today Thursday having been to Preston and Leeds before returning to the local distribution office. Next time I will drive the 5 miles and drop the parcel off!

Honoured to chair a commemoration event in the House of Commons today marking the Halabja massacre, where thousands of Kurds were killed in a chemical weapons attack by Saddam Hussein’s regime in 1988.

I visited Halabja in 2013, and I wrote that we must move from ‘never again’ to ‘always protect.’

This afternoon I attended an event to commemorate 37 years since Halabja and the genocide of Kurds.
Hearing the testimony of survivors aged only 11 at the time was incredibly moving and important. The challenge of “never again” is still there. Remembering is a vital first step.

A brave book by a brave man @kabsjourno.bsky.social - a detailed account of an autocratic state and the danger faced by those who challenge seeking transparency and accountability - a must read about #Tanzania

Interesting
watching some of this afternoon‘s debate on violence against women and girls in the Commons. Many more men taking part than tended to happen in such debates when I was in Parliament. Some very moving speeches by those who have experienced violence.

Here are the recommendations on sexual exploitation from IICSA www.iicsa.org.uk/recommendati...
I understand none of these have been implemented. Rather than spend billions on another public inquiry, put more money into front line services.

Wonderful nine lessons and carols in Ripon Cathedral yesterday evening - the choir sang a whole range of old carols. The music and singing was beautiful.

This large window dominates the library landing of Ripon Cathedral. It depicts Ruth and Naomi within an elaborate gold, shield-like frame, like a wall memorial but in glass. It’s from 1957 and seems on a cusp, being neither wholly traditional nor modern in style.

If you listen to Syrians, you'll see there is a huge focus on the prisons. Thousands of people are now being released from these slaughter houses, some of them had been there since 1982.
