My quote of the day

Toxic people defy logic. Some are blissfully unaware of the negative impact that they have on those around them, and others seem to derive satisfaction from creating chaos and pushing other people's buttons.

In 1963 the US govt spent 2.5% GDP on research in America. This was on top of what business spent on research, and was not conflated with business "spending" on research by bundling in expenses like advertising into their research budgets.

That spike in 1963 has driven our economy for decades.
Some charts for those who don't know the extent of the US public (and private) investment in research (particularly in biomedical research) compared to other countries and institutions. The destruction of the US' scientific institutions has global implications.

One good way to destroy a society its to incentivize a snitch culture, where people learn to distrust one another. You don't have to look for Stasi examples. See state laws putting private bounties on women seeking an abortion.

SNAP benefits to feed people run out on Sunday.

The House GOP refuses to meet in session.

None of this is normal nor acceptable.

"We need to stop trusting the experts" is quite the statement from the head of US health and human services.

Some of us have committed our lives & professional work to illuminating new frontiers and teaching others how to do the same.

The abject cruelty tied to that statement is ... whew.
RFK Jr: We need to stop trusting the experts... Trusting the experts is not a feature of science or democracy, it's a feature of religion and totalitarianism.

Trump's 3 step plan to create a military omniforce
1. Purge - those deemed disloyal
2. Merge - different parts of law enforcement/military
3. Surge - impose the omniforce on Dem cities; instigate unrest; assert dominance; silence dissent

You. Do. Not. Try. To. Prove. Your. Hypothesis.

That is completely backwards.

The proper way to do science is to form a hypothesis, and then do everything you can to try and tear that hypothesis apart.

Any other way is scientifically unsound at the least, and malpractice or outright lies at worst

If a government tells you that you can’t call it authoritarian, it’s authoritarian.
