Historian of the Middle East c. 950-1500 CE, but I teach much more broadly. I'm writing a book about religious diversity in an illiberal society.

I'm trying to remember something: many years ago, a student brought my attention to a courtier in late 1600s (iirc) complaining about a Habsburg that "his majesty stinketh," because the emperor or prince lacked bowel control mechanisms. Any historians recognize this story? Charles II of Spain?

Islamicists still often limit their inquiries (even of social or political phenomena) to Muslim sources. Scholars of Jewish history under Islam are more aware of Islamic Studies, but often unaware of studies Eastern Chr.ty. I have a reinterpretation of Ibn Sina based on religious diversity. /fin

I disagree with the claim that there is no benefit to a larger umbrella. There's room for disagreement here. Byzantinists usually ignore Jewish subjects, and frequently assert erroneously that there were no Muslim populations under Byzantine rule, so the expansion is largely "Christians only." +

I agree that we should always have room for specialized studies within Byzantine, Syriac, Armenian Studies, etc., and I agree that Byzantine Studies has been including more Syriac and Armenian! But I am writing a book about the benefit of "medieval Middle Eastern history" (1000-1500), so of course+

I think there's a category #3 among humanities profs:
3. People who feel great dread but are persuaded they "cannot understand the tech" and feel embarrassed by #2 labeling them "Luddites" (as if that were shameful!) so do not have a coherent explanation for why they want to resist.
