I have pictured here a pair of Piping Plovers (say that five times fast) who were hanging out together at Fort De Soto Park (near St. Petersburg, Florida) on March 11, 2025. The individual with the more pronounced black crown stripe and neck band is the male.

Join us this Saturday for our field trip to Sandy Ridge Reservation! This location boasts a whopping 250 bird species observed there since the park's opening. Primary target species in late March are waterfowl and birds of prey.

Eleven brave birders showed up during a lake effect snow warning for the field trip at West Creek Reservation on January 4, 2025. As we gathered in the parking lot we saw six Common Loons flying overhead... according to eBird this is a new species for the hotspot! We also had a beautiful Merlin.

The 2nd Saturday Bird Walk at the Rocky River Nature Center on 1/11/2025 produced 33 species. The regular winter species were present, but we had several highlights: a Barred Owl perched in a conifer, a Northern Flicker feeding on Poison Ivy berries, a Brown Creeper, Winter Wren, and Swamp Sparrow.

Tree Swallow perched atop a nesting box pole at Frohring Meadows on April 20, 2024. I'll be leading another bird walk at this location this coming spring.
