Consciousness is sharp and sudden. Andrew opens his eyes to find his headache gone and several more aches in its place. A quick study of his surroundings places him on the floor next to the bed. He grabs the bedframe with both hands and hoists himself to his feet, kicking away the sheets wound around his legs. Throwing the sheets and pillow mostly onto the bed, he turns to the mirror to gauge the accuracy of his assumption that he looks like hell. If Hell were a middle-aged scientist, Andrew decides, he’d probably at least be better dressed. Andrew’s lab coat, unwashed for several weeks, retains no trace of crispness. A few small coffee stains and large pencil smudges grace the front; the collar folds not down but everywhere. A pen has burst in the front pocket, leaving behind a splotch of blue ink across the right side of his chest. His shirt doesn’t look terrible, most likely because it was gray to begin with. His pants are in much the same state as his coat. He meets his own eyes. Dark, wrinkled shadows complement their muddy green-brown hue. His glasses are bent and smudged; his face is unshaven and his chin is bruised. His dirt-brown hair hangs in fragments across his forehead and over his ears. Yes, Hell the scientist would take better care of himself. Andrew reaches for a comb, decides he doesn’t care, pushes his hair back, and sets off to the lab.

I am not a scientist. I am not a human.” Andrew blinks. “You said you were.” “I said I am a person.” “You understand that difference, but you don’t know--” That subject doesn’t lead anywhere right now. “What was the point of this conversation, HELE/NA? If you want me to do something, you should give me time to think.”
