It's for the studios who are increasingly going for the big profit safe bets than taking a shot downfield on a risky new IP.
I have no issue with Harry Potter but even Nick Frost as Hagrid isn't enough to get me committed to an entire HBO series reboot.

I do think Harry Potter still basically holds up as a kids-to-YA book series and the films are solid adaptations, but it does strike me that basically every drop of good content has been wrung from the source material at this stage. I'm not sure who this new adaptation is for.
