We investigate the biological mechanisms by which the social and physical environment influence maternal health and children's developmental trajectories. We do so using a combination of evolutionary, ecological and DOHaD theoretical frameworks and methods

We need to make pregnancy and the postpartum period safe for all women. Currently, maternal mortality rates are at an all time high in the US. In order to make things safer, we need more funding, research, and representation. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39832282/

Why do tumors have so many nonstem cancer cells when only stem cells can propagate them? Our study uses evolutionary models to explore this paradox, suggesting that some tumors may have functional division of labor.

An evolutionary explanation for the presence of cancer nonstem cells in neoplasms
Contrary to conventional views that assume all cells in a neoplasm can propagate the tumor, the cancer stem cell hypothesis posits that only a fraction of the cells (the cancer stem cells) can act as...

It was great to speak with @stefanicbc.bsky.social on CBC Saskatchewan this morning about our research on intimate partner violence & cardiovascular disease in women.

It's long past time to deal with the epidemic of IPV & a 1st step is admitting it is an epidemic.

My department is hiring!

Tenure track biocultural anthropology position with a focus on health equity. I love my colleagues & we have great students (undergrad & grad). We also have some of the strongest abortion access laws in the US & we’re unionized too!
