Biological person. Erstwhile engineer, poor runner, purchaser of musical instruments I never play. Don’t blame me, I voted for Kodos.

End of the postwar order? Potential war? Climate emergency? Cost of living crisis? Nice to see the UK newspapers have their fingers on the pulse

Happy new year to you all. Let’s hope it brings you health and happiness. Looks like a fab firework display down in London (which will keep the Mail and Telegraph in copy for the next week).

And just reflecting on the FIFA peace prize award for a moment, I wonder if there will be a gong handed out for best urban redeveloper, or suchlike?

I've just used Good Law Project's tool to let Virgin Active know they're following transphobes, not the law. You can do it too here: goodlaw.social/638d25
Virgin Active: Stop following transphobes, follow the law
After a legal threat from GB News presenter Michelle Dewberry, Virgin Active turned their back on a long record of inclusion and enforced a changing room and bathroom ban on trans people across all th...

Plenty of bad things going on in the world, but it’s nice to see E.on Energy lighten the mood by estimating an annual (residential) energy bill to be £22,230

This must be the “dignity and respect” for trans people that Starmer pontificates about. I’m sure those words will provide comfort to those people being lined up against the wall.
Keir Starmer has appointed as his new Comms Director Tim Allan who was a board member of the hate group Sex Matters. It's no longer even pretending to adhere to its Manifesto promise to "remove indignities for trans people who deserve recognition and acceptance."

For those not paying attention, it was never only about reasonable concerns and safety, but a wider campaign to eliminate trans people (specifically trans women) from the public sphere. Paying Danegeld will never sate the anti-trans lobby
111/NHS direct is a joke. Having to misgender yourself to the people there for no reason is outright humiliating. It's designed to put trans people off reaching out for healthcare support.

There were years of surveys that worked on finding respectful ways to gather this information, disregarded.

Richard Murphy is right: the rental sector is out of control. I’m not holding my breath that the government will fix it, though.
Rents in the UK are out of control. Across England, they now swallow more than 36% of gross income. For millions, life is no longer about living — it’s about paying landlords. This video explains why rent is dragging families into poverty, and suggests ways forward.

In news that will come as no surprise to anyone paying attention, the UK looks set to press ahead with its own bathroom ban. Applications for the necessary Genital Inspectorate will be opened shortly.

Otto is right. The Telegraph (Mail, Times, castle-dwellers etc.) have been relentless in pushing anti-trans stories over the past few years. Unfortunately, there has been little pushback against their nonsense.
The moment I saw that "trans bra" M & S story I sensed it was nonsense.

Seconds later, having read the Telegraph piece I knew it was worse than that. It was deliberate hate mongering completely devoid of evidence, names and facts.

Superb job of debunking it here

Interesting article on the role of anti-trans campaigning in the UK. Given how often stories about trans lives appear on the front pages, one might have expected at least one of the major broadsheets or tabloids to cover this. How odd that they haven’t.
"The organisation’s [sex matters] true agenda is..[]..best described as ‘eliminationist’: seeking through legislative bans, data policies, and the curtailing of gender-affirming care to relegate trans people in life and law to their sex at birth and make transitioning so difficult..

Jess O’Thomson gives an erudite analysis of today’s UKSC ruling. The following line is particularly chilling and should concern anyone who thinks this will be the end matter: “The reality is that the anti-trans campaigners don’t want trans people to exist, let alone use any public toilets”.
