Great article and something that the general public and just as importantly, legislatures, etc need to understand about geology and its place in higher ed, society, etc. It’s 100% critical for how we live. #geology #kansas #environment #geoscience

Mining jobs in Canada: ‘dirty’ image scares off young recruits | The Narwhal
There are plenty of mining jobs in Canada amid the rush for critical minerals. Can the industry clean up its image and recruit new workers?

Microbes are collectively one of the biggest forces shaping Earth, and yet undergraduate #geology students typically receive little training in microbiology. My new open access textbook seeks to help. “Microbiology for Earth Scientists” is freely available here newprairiepress.org/ebooks/53/

Another field work photo from Yukon, Canada. This one shows pH dependent mineral precipitation at the confluence of two streams. The white colour is from aluminum precipitates and orange colour is from iron precipitates. This phenomenon results from natural weathering of shales.

Field work photo seems like a good first Bluesky post. This acidic, metal-rich pond is fed groundwater discharge from shales in the Ogilvie mountains north of Dawson City, Yukon, Canada. Lots of interesting (bio)geochemistry to study…looking forward to a return visit.
