📣New Work Wednesday!📣

Is teaching a calling, a profession, or labor? This study maps how 3 institutional logics—an accountability logic, a democratic logic, and a moral calling logic—shape teachers’ identities.

Morning! I did a lil analysis and turns out that, when ED employees are illegally fired and contracts are canceled, ED is unable to fulfill its congressional mandate to publish national statistics on the condition of education.

Why does that matter? Well...

I'm teaching Ed Policy for Teacher Leaders this summer. I'm inheriting the wonderful Dr. Farley-Ripple's materials, but they're several years old. What should I include in my refresh, particularly in these times? Academic articles welcomed, but also videos, practitioner-facing articles, etc. please!

New from Jen Darling-Aduana, @dave-woo.bsky.social, and me: We observed lessons in an online charter school to understand instructional quality. Despite the school's marketing as an innovative, tailored alternative to traditional brick-and-mortar publics, teachers' instruction rarely reflected this.

Seems to me what we’re seeing across the federal government are the dividends being paid from years of adopting market language to talk about public goods. Run government like a business? Businesses exist to make profit. Government exists to serve the people. We’re about to see the difference now.

Please forgive a little earnest-posting.

I’m finding the start of 2025 kind of hard and while there are obvious reasons to dread what’s coming, I think it’s more than the new administration. A lot of my ground truths have been unsettled in a way that makes it hard to know what to do next.
