I’m very open to learning here: my understanding is that Marx says workers are alienated from their labor because the capital and thus the profit is controlled by the ruling class. If I own a hot dog cart and I go out and work for a day, I seem to be owning my means and performing my own labor.

Does it make the street side vendor a capitalist or an example of actualized communism? They own the means of production, and they work using it. They aren't profiting off of the labor of someone else, they are a worker who owns their tools...
