18. The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. This one wasn’t for me, but after a slow start it tied up nicely at the end. And props to the author for carving out a career with a degree in Ancient Greek.

17. The Revenant by Michael Punke. Pretty good yarn! I’d say the first 30-40% rivals or exceeds the movie, but the movie’s back half eclipses the source material. Not a put-down — it’s tough for words to compete with Iñárritu plus Tom Hardy as a bad guy. (And DiCaprio drooling, I guess.)

ALERT: I have propagated a cactus! found a broken beavertail on the sidewalk, took it home, and turned it into a new plant. sorry to distract from The Horrors but, candidly, this kicks ass

16. Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel. It is nothing short of *sorcery* to make me interested in a SECOND book about English royalty 500 years ago. The prose is unlike anything else I’ve read: elegant but accessible, understated but lively. I’m gonna rec Wolf Hall to people for years to come.

some Malibu #birds from August 🪶
• ruddy turnstone (with a juvenile/non-breeding black-bellied plover running into frame)
• snowy plover (my first! so tiny!)
• red-breasted merganser, unusual to see one walking on land
• double-crested cormorant looking for a hug (and/or drying its wings)

BIRD TIME 🪶
• Lark sparrow. probably my favorite sparrow, the facial markings are so cool
• yellow warbler. common bird, me getting a clean photo of one is highly uncommon
• acorn woodpecker. highly social doofuses
• Bewick’s wren. tiny but bold and loud
(all photographed this month in Pasadena)
