Like many journalists of my vintage, “All the President’s Men” (the book and the film) partly inspired my career choice. Though I think “The Sting” is Robert Redford’s best performance.

Eighty years ago today, Aug. 19, 1945, my father, Army Sgt. Louis Schmitz, was a member of Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s honor guard as the commander of Allied forces in the Pacific met with Japanese officials in Manila City Hall to negotiate the terms of Japan’s surrender to end World War II. 🧵
