It has become received wisdom in Brussels and Washington that there is a new “euro-sclerosis”: that the EU economy is lagging the US

This view is wrong

What if centrists all missed the obvious: instead of copying the populists' policies - and therewith growing them - they should have copied their methods instead while sticking to their agenda.

I guess "getting tough on migration" just doesn't work for centrists.
If politics are going crazy in several European countries one after the other, I think it is time to go past blaming the failures of individual political actors (and there are quite a few, both in the UK and France) to looking at the systemic pressures our political systems are failing to deal with.
If you are overly focused on the admittedly increasingly batsh*t character of British politics, don‘t neglect the batsh*t character of French politics.

EU decision making reminds me of what Bill Gates said about how we overestimate the change that will occur in the next two years and underestimate the change that will occur in the next ten.

EU close up looks pretty slow, but as Max points out, taken together it moves faster than you think.
So much of the coverage of the EU is hyper-micro. It's all about the sausage making. So story out of Copenhagen European Council is "dithering," "all talk, no action," nothing fully agreed, etc. It's an effing meeting! Take a step back... they are moving on Eurobonds/frozen Russian assets. 1/

Von der Leyen has just announced the Commission's "Rearm Europe" plan. The most important parts target national fiscal space: The Commission will activate the national escape clauses in the fiscal rules and put a new loans-based instrument on the table.

Here is what it means:

For Europe to defend itself, two fiscal policy decisions could make a difference: A clear defense exemption in the fiscal rules and a big EU programme to pay for common projects from military mobility to missile defense, funded by joint debt.

The rest is financial alchemy and/or symbolic noise.

EU leaders discussed how to finance the necessary surge in defense spending yesterday at their "informal retreat". They adopted no formal conclusions, but we can infer the main results from the statements after, in particular by Von der Leyen who was the clearest.

Here's what I'd make of it:
