Working on animal welfare, food system change and sustainability at Compassion in World Farming EU, views are my own, he/him
Strong intervention by @eeb.org
during the panel on agriculture for the future. They stressed the need to move away from factory farming of animals as it is terrible for farmed animals welfare, hurts our environment and threatens our strategic autonomy on inputs like feed and fertilizer imports.

Following the @socialistsanddemocrats.eu event on CAP today. Interested to learn about their vision for a fair and sustainable CAP and what their plans are for a just transition towards better farmed animal welfare, nature protection and delivering on healthy food for Europeans.

Full house in the Parliament today for EU Action Plan for Plant-Based food event! 🧑‍🌾

Very hopeful to see support for this from Commissioner @christophehansen.bsky.social and from Mep's from EPP to the Left and everything in between💪

A strong 🇪🇺 plant-based sector is key for EU agriculture's future 🫛

@cristinaguarda.bsky.social justly points out that from a food autonomy perspective it is crucial to support EU 🧑‍🌾 to produce enough and healthy food for 🇪🇺 citizens and we should deprioritize producing animal proteins of which many are destined for third countries. #agrifood#FoodnotFeed

Congrats to @eeb.org and Green Transition Denmark for organizing the Depolarising debate on the Protein Shift for a Resilient Future today 💪💚

The testimonies of Danish representatives on the Green Tripartite Agreement were inspiring and should be a model for the 🇪🇺 and its members states!

Very exiting for the Terra Madre Europe event from the 22nd until the 24th of June organized by @slowfoodhq.bsky.social.

It will be the opportunity for agroecological farmers and policy makers to start a constructive dialogue and showcase their products and methods to the Brussels bubbel.

Pierre-Marie Aubet shared his vision on the future of livestock during the Livestock Excellence workshop today.

He shared this slide to highlight that the amount of animal protein we consume on average is significantly too high in relation to a healthy diet.

The second panel got kicked off by young regenerative farmer Anne Van Leeuwen.👩‍🌾

She made great points on the need for long-term capital & healthy interest rates that don't push farmers into overly extractive models. 💶

She also called for the closing of the gap between producer & eater ✅️

Right afterwards, Commissioner @christophehansen.bsky.social took the floor.

Some highlights from his intervention:

- We need an evolution of the CAP and not a revolution

- Innovation will be crucial for livestock farming sust

- Resilience and better disaster management are crucial for farmers

Following the 🇪🇺 event on the vision for Agriculture and Food today.

The day got opened by @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu who spoke about simplification, fair prices and generational renewal.

Unfortunately she forgot to mention climate/envi impact, animal welfare or food policy in general. 🤔

Jörg-Andreas Krüger of NABU, stresses that we need more financial incentives to support farmers to realize sustainability targets and the need to move away from area-based payments.

Great introduction by @Janez Potočnik at the Forum for the future of Agriculture. He highlighted the importance of acknowledging that the sustainability of our agrifood system is the foundation of its competitiveness.

Thanks to Ines of @eurogroupforanimals.org to share the complex step by step way in which a cow stands up.

Making it possible for all cows to freely stand up should be the bare minimum for cows in the EU. We look at the Commission to include a ban on tethering in the animal welfare revision.
March 26, 2025 at 12:38 PM
As cows are social animals that like to graze, meet with their friends and move around freely tethering is a practice that should be banned asap in the EU.

Sweden shows that phasing out tethering is possible. Other EU member states should follow their example. The EU should propose an EU-wide ban.

Thank you to @MEPSebastian Everding and @eurogroupforanimals.org for organizing a crucial event on the cruel and unnecessary practice of tethering dairy cows.

Tethering is when cattle are fixed to a place in the barn with chains or fixed neck frames.

A still to common practice in the 🇪🇺

Attended @politico.eu event on EU #OceanPact today. MEP @IsabellaLövin rightfully reminded Commissioner Kadis that feeding farmed fish with wild fish is unsustainable and that pollution from intensive animal farming needs to be tackled in the Ocean Pact in order to prevent ocean dead zones.

Today, 25 wonderful activists of Belgian animal rights organisation Bite Back protested in front of the Flemish agricultural ministry.

They are protesting against the use of taxpayer money to promote the dying and cruel Belgian rabbit meat sector during the "week of the rabbit".

The tram in BXL this morning: "Every time you consume 3 dairy products per day, that counts to improve animal welfare"

You know what would really improve animal welfare? If the EU would stop wasting taxpayer 💶 on ridiculous and scientifically false adds to save an industry wracking the environment.

Beware⚠️:

"Research during the past three decades has yielded strong evidence that dietary factors play important roles in the risk of Alzheimer Disease. The most important dietary risk factors appear to be meat, especially red and processed meat, and UPFs."
