Spent the week with family in Kaua'i, and I learned that it's not just any paradise: it's chicken paradise. These fellas are all over, and you can hear their majestic calls every so often. Real good energy!

Damn, looks like @jonbois.bsky.social is now in the pocket of Big Two. The way to reform Big Tech isn't to Just Add One
if you're a tech journalist in the present climate, it's incumbent upon you to ask why big tech is pursuing dead ends like AI when they could just start using the number 2. ones and zeroes have taken us as far as they can. either chuck a few 2s in there or cede the future of tech to those who will

"Carnival" derives from the Latin "carne levare", which means "farewell to meat".

Today I learned Alaska doesn't have counties. Wow! Why? Is that good? Thanks Alaska for being our test pilot!

Joni Mitchell is almost certainly the most influential female musician of the 20th century. How do we only have one, mediocre biography of her? I would devour all 1,500 pages of a Robert Caro-esque book chronicling her life & music in a heartbeat.

5) So yeah, Bluesky might be the next Twitter, maybe even with better management. I'm really excited about that! But ATProto isn't the next email standard for micro-blogging.

Getting in the weeds of these protocols, it's easy to get lost in the trees, but taking a step back to see the forest, it seems like... 🧵
1) Bluesky is mostly just a Twitter clone. In practical terms, it's not decentralized/federated, i.e. they make content decisions, can read dms, etc.

A technical deep-dive, since people have been asking me for my thoughts. I'll expand a bit on some of the key points here in a thread. 🧵

Seeing these Trump court cases voluntarily winding down is pretty scary. Feels like preemptive compliance under fascism, right?

If they really have a case (they do), why not force Trump's hand?

Judge indefinitely postpones sentencing in Trump's hush money case
The decision to indefinitely adjourn next week's sentencing date comes several days after both lawyers agreed that a stay would help sort out unprecedented legal questions.

Lots of new people joining Bluesky, and lots of great starter packs floating around, so here’s another idea: if you work at the intersection of food/agriculture, nature, and climate, introduce yourself and what you do below so folks can keep connecting. Who’s here now?

Coming on here has been like going to a family reunion (in a good way) — just reconnecting with a bunch of people who I haven’t seen or heard from in what feels like forever.

High school sports haven't crossed my mind in years, but making our country better for trans people matters. To manage that, we have to win elections, but Dems have been too busy greasing the squeakiest wheels to build a broad coalition that can actually deliver the goods www.vox.com/policy/38554...
The trans school sports rule the Democrats didn’t talk about
The Biden administration proposed a change to school athletics that sought a compromise.

Found this great tool for finding people to follow on Bluesky! It recommends accounts based on who your followers follow, both
- absolute for generally popular accounts, and
- proportional for accounts more specific to your network
