Demoralizing as a reader and a writer. The “let people enjoy things never question quality” and “all art is subjective and skill is a myth” arguments have, along with AI and capitalist greed in the publishing industry, set us back so far in terms of literacy and what we are willing to accept.

The quality of most contemporary adult books—across genres—seems to be what YA once was, and many YA books now seem written at an elementary school level. Not every book needs to be at Virginia Woolf levels, but when I see a book lauded as “amazing” and it’s just twee tumblr writing, it’s both
