Really great and insightful thread presentation of a really great talk, really important when we’re discussing fiction esp the classics to remember the real people who are impacted by the way they are depicted
When people say that Wuthering Heights doesn't have anything to do with race or that no film has engaged with race, what they mean is that for them Romani people do not count and they also haven't been paying attention. Man, I remember in high school my mum writing a very irritated note to the school librarian to let me borrow whatever I wanted because she was sick of having to sign permission slips so i could get the next Anne Rice book I wanted to borrow. Any book is a children’s book if the kid can read etc
every time we talk about parental permission in terms of book banning I'm like fuck man. kids have rights too. a 17-year-old should be able to check out books at the library without Mom and Dad stepping in. so should a 10-year-old or 7 or whatever. kids deserve SOME goddamn freedom and privacy
