Because who has a sharper instinct for movies than the video game company that brought us Warcraft (2016)
Steven Spielberg wanted to direct the Call of Duty movie but Activision refused to cede creative control. A great example of how we don't get the best filmmakers in IP blockbusters anymore (from Matt Belloni's Puck newsletter)

Since 2023, translators and interpreters have seen work dry up, rates plummet and their jobs reduced to editing AI-generated output. Some are leaving the field, others are considering bankruptcy. All despite any major upgrade in translation quality.

This is how AI is killing translation work:

Few industries have been hit by AI as hard as translation. Rates are plummeting. Work is drying up. Translators are considering abandoning the field, or bankruptcy. These are their stories.

I hope the bubble bursts, but Generative AI has already devastated the translation and localization industry. Most major video game companies have all but stopped using translators altogether and once a company stops spending money on something you can’t make them start again

My current J-Drama is Fune wo Amu (舟を編む), about a team of lexicographers who have to make a dictionary. Perfect for geeking out for linguists and Japanese learners, plus I think this is the first mainstream Japanese show I've seen with a gay supporting character

A recommendation: Soundtrack to a Coup d’État, about the Congolese independence. Incredible that a documentary made entirely of archival footage could become so passionate through music and editing

Spoilers for Superman, but while I like the “concept” of the twist about his parents, it feels thematically muddled. Its two main messages are about helping people and valuing his real parents who raised him, but neither of those things is something this character needs to learn

#TheSummerHikaruDied is incredible. One episode in, it’s already my favourite anime of the year so far. Queerness and horror are perfect bedfellows yet I’ve never seen them combine like they do here. It’s eerie and unsettling and beautiful too. Don’t overlook this one please

I’m not on board with this new abridged style Lonely Planet guides are using now. Dropping hotels I get because there’s TripAdvisor but I really miss the restaurant and shop listings

One of the things I appreciate about Kojima is that starting with MGS2 every game of his places more and more emphasis on pacifist gameplay, until in Death Stranding you straight up cannot kill enemies
