I'm sorry to be so difficult, but I'm afraid the truth is that I am.
Exactly, yes.

(In case you don't know, b/c most people don't, the reason it was a *kinder*transport is that officials took the view that if you get them here young, there's a better chance of educating Jewiness out of them. Parents had to put their children on those trains not knowing if they'll see them again.)

I absolutely know what you're saying & I agree on the substance. But Britain has a track record of feeling proud for doing terribly little & terribly grudgingly, like the hallowed Kindertransport that saved 10,000 children of the 1.5 million who perished, at the cost of separating their families.

We are not preserving our heritage with this regime, we are preventing it from being preserved. A building that can be sufficiently updated, made more weather secure & energy efficient, has a future. A building that sits empty while buddleia grows between the blocks is a memento mori for a culture.

The Mechanics Institute in Swindon was worth listing, but at the same time it was endlessly remodelled in its ~140 years. It had snooker tables upstairs, it got a breeze block fly tower at some point, rooms were re/moved. Now it needs £45 million to precisely recreate every detail, needed or not.

The easiest way to make any building destined for dereliction is to have it listed. The Oasis dome in Swindon? Campaigners had it listed to "protect" it, now any reopening of the water park is going to cost twice as much as it would have done if the fabric of the 1970's structure could be updated.

Yes. But not in the sense that they don't love her.

Surprise!
My main takeaway of the whole Epstein thing is that women, on a very fundamental level, still don‘t really matter.

Doesn't everybody get lonely? It's not unique to men, surely?

Honestly, you've dodged a bullet. It's unbelievably steep so that from the extremely narrow & precarious platform up top you can't actually see the steps - it feels like a sheer drop on all sides, & there are no barriers or handholds. I was clinging to the masonry with my fingernails.

Have you been to the top? Single most terrifying experience of my life. So triggered right now.

Or you could say it's about men not being good enough. Comes down to the same thing though in the end, doesn't it.

It's a shame. But the business model of a historic market/arcade being redeveloped as a trendy street food box park can't be expected to work everywhere. There are only so many Yorkshire pudding burritos the country can eat.
