and another thing. As people get richer, there are diminishing returns on what they can get from the next marginal $ they spend. See chasing a wedding in Venice, or building personal spaceships. I think they (and I) would barely notice a real quality of life change from paying more in taxes.

I don’t think it should be lost that we are a rich country and could fix a lot of this at step 1, the tax rates.

But by far the biggest impacts will be on people who touch the social safety net, because there are far more people in this situation. And I think elites don’t realize how often people end up needing a functioning safety net because of bad luck.

I see this mainly through the lens of step 2, state capacity destruction, since my main touch point with the government is NASA, which has been a jewel in the crown of this country for 60 years.
