🧵Yesterday, I received notice that my #NIH grant, on the social environment, lifecourse, epigenetics & #birthoutcomes in Black families, was terminated. This grant represented a critical effort to address the ⬆️ rates of maternal & infant mortality in the US, particularly among Black mothers & babies

🚨I converted the list of terminated #NIH grants (as of 3/22) into a google sheet. I added activity codes and award jurisdictions (see tabs for grant count and $ by each). Note this HHS list likely does not include all planned/completed terminations as of this date.🚨 Please use, share and distribute!

"On October 8, 1931, a law went into effect requiring every Italian university professor to sign an oath pledging their loyalty to the government of Benito Mussolini. Out of over 1,200 professors in the country, only 12 refused. All of them were immediately fired." www.chronicle.com/article/what...

In 1931, Italian scholars were made to take loyalty oaths. Will that happen to us?

The American Diabetes Association issued a statement regarding NIH's discontinuation of the landmark Diabetes Prevention Program Outcomes Study:

"Eliminating funding means the loss of a decade’s worth of important findings and progress toward diabetes prevention."

$1.83B not awarded. $1.83B not discovering cures or designing new technologies. $1.83B lost from local economies. Many, many labs struggling with the same decisions I am: how do we keep our research program intact when the structures that enable us to do our work are systematically dismantled?
So how much funding has been withheld?

Based on the results from 2023-2024 and the relative size of 91.8%, the amount anticipated can be calculated and compared with the actual awards made through February.

The result: WITHHELD FUNDING: $1.83 B.

This is correct. Until the public objects in unison, the despots retain control
This is an authoritarian takeover of the US government.
The battle is not in the courts.
The courts are a tool. But the real battle is for public opinion.

And science and medical research can and should be at the front lines of that battle. People care about the takeover harming cancer research.

I am reposting my #AHRQ post again, as it very disturbing and, to my knowledge, not covered in the news feeds i follow. The recent I (insufficient evidence) recommendation for screening for #foodinsecurity may remain I for a long time if AHRQ and #USPSTF are decimated by Trump administration cuts.
@twiph.bsky.social Sadly, AHRQ staff have been subject to extreme cuts (as many as 80% of AHRQ employees). Because AHRQ provides day to day support for USPSTF, as well as funds the EPCs that conduct systematic literature reviews for USPSTF workgroups, this puts the Task Force at great risk!
Is anyone else *pleasantly* surprised that USPSTF is still a thing?

This is where science is at. Amplify the message: when NIH is cut, science in this country stops. Science depends on the stability of the NIH +others. Funding cuts, delays, and uncertainties mean we can't do our work. Support KLAB, and also call your legislature and tell them this is unacceptable!
It pains us to say this.
Our lab aims to find cures for many GI conditions.
We proudly do both discovery & mentor students - Americans & non-americans alike, & we will have to pause both..unless we find support.

So please, help support us keeping discovering & mentoring

This is horrible to post, but I may as well post it. We are essentially shutting down research operations in my group, which is focused on treatments for pediatric brain cancer. I’m a well funded investigator, and there’s no choice. Science can’t function without the stability of NIH
