I was at Golders Green Crematorium today for a family funeral, but found time to walk around the gardens first. I'm very glad I did.

I bought this as I needed an emergency #vegan roast, but can reveal it is actually very tasty and comes recommended.

Seeing as the spooky season is soon upon us, my nighttime reading matter of choice is this. Remember, #donthavenightmares.

10. The Desperate Hours. Possibly the best episode of Steptoe, their relationship mirrored as it is in the story of the two convicts who hide out at their abode; Harold egging on the analogous Leonard Rossiter (another sublime performance) to ditch the old man and escape. To no avail.

9. Divided We Stand. Possibly the funniest episode of Steptoe And Son. Is it a serious statement about apartheid? No.
October 21, 2025 at 7:55 PM
8. Oh, What A Beautiful Mourning. Genuinely funny. We're now firmly in Steptoe As Sitcom Land. There aren't many that work but this one does. ("It's the first bleedin' drink I've ever had on him!") One of the rare occasions where the Steptoes win.

7. A Star Is Born. I've said it before, but I'll say it again, the pathos in Harry H Corbett's line delivery of "I'm a rag and bone man, and that's all I'll ever be" is gut wrenching.

6. A Death In The Family. Another episode with the perfect punchline.
October 21, 2025 at 7:55 PM
5. Crossed Swords. I'm not sure enough is said about Galton and Simpson's writing and their episode construction providing the perfect payoff, sometimes with a twist that isn't just Albert getting the upper hand. This episode is one such example.

4. And Afterwards At... Harry H Corbett notoriously felt typecast, and your heart can only go out to him when he turns in performances such as in this episode where Harold gets jilted at the altar. Utterly compelling.

3. The Lead Man Cometh. The acting spark between Harry H Corbett and Leonard Rossiter is pure joy to watch, and thankfully there's another episode later.

2. The Bird. Has Steptoe & Son weathered the change of time well? No, not at all. Every episode has a "This episode reflects language of the time" warning, and in this instance the Bird is obviously a girlfriend. But it's the vindictive twist perpetuated by Albert at the end which is breathtaking.

1. The Offer. The original pilot, setting the scene admirably for the next eight series to come. You're in no doubt from the off just how desperate Harold's plight is as he tries to get away moving the cart but can't, and Albert's vindictiveness. A relationship that thankfully mellows over time.

I think it was a @cheeseford.bsky.social post a few months ago that alerted me to The Beiderbecke Trilogy (thank you!). I'd never heard of it so I'm watching it for the first time. A good thing too as this may get me back into listening to jazz. James Bolan and Barbara Flynn make a fab couple.
