Nature, climate and gardens.
Inspired by @themarshtit.bsky.social's The Meaning of Geese, I bought an old bike to explore the countryside around Kinver. Today I managed to get out on it proper for a spot of biking birding. Species heard or seen included:

Song Thrush
Blackcap
Chiffchaff
Whitethroat
Yellowhammer
Swallow

In amongst that lot a Chiffchaff sings.

Ah, it's glyphosate season again.

Not a bad morning's birding in the frost. A Kestrel and a pair of Peregrines. The Peregrines are overwintering birds but the Kes is a resident. #lowcarbonbirding #birds #birding

If you turn your garden into a haven for wildlife, it's guaranteed to be frequented by creatures great and small. Here are some of the amazing animals that have visited us in the last year.

Never noticed these before, the tiny flowers on Hazel trees, until they were mentioned on Countryfile last week. This is on our Cob tree. Stunning aren't they?

Thank goodness for Al Jazeera. Because I can't see any Western media reporting of today's ICJ hearing on the legal consequences of Israeli occupation of Palestine.

Got this from our local library. Looking forward to diving in. What are your bird book recommendations? Did I tell you that I am an absolute sucker for a book recommendation?! #birds 🪶

A first for our garden today. A Siskin. I can go back to bed now, my work here is done. #birds 🪶

Nice.

Behold, your daily Blackcap. #birds 🪶

A lone Goldfinch regularly visits our Nyjer seeds feeder. It's obviously keeping this food supply secret from the neighbourhood charm, which can number up to 30 #birds on a good day. 🪶

Nearly every day an overwintering Blackcap visits our Stourbridge garden. It's just amazing. #birds 🪶

My January 2024 birding record. Highlights have been the Blackcaps and Redpolls. Hope my handwriting is legible! What birds have you seen so far this year? #birds 🪶

I totally get that these aren't the best bird pictures you'll ever see. In fact they're probably among the worst. But they are of a male Kestrel (my fave bird) & a flock of at least 130 Fieldfares (+ a few Redwings). Seen today between Kinver & Stourbridge, West Mids. Isn't that exciting?! #birds 🪶

Absolutely loving this by Alastair Humphreys. The idea of finding interest and adventure in one's neighborhood is something that really excites me.

A life-changing encounter between two birds of the woods. For the Sparrowhawk, life-sustaining. For the Goldcrest, life-ending. There's a Serengeti on your doorstep if you know where to look.

I predict a Robin's nest in this Leylandii hedge soon. This bird and its mate have been going in and out at the same spot for the last few days. Not carrying any materials yet but it seems like they're scoping things out.

I feel your pain. I had this gorgeous Blackcap visit me this morning and had the same thought!

It's hard for a Monday to get any better than this. A male Blackcap bathing in the garden.
