We had a challenge one summer with the then-middle-school-aged children to use it in conversation with other people. My husband was very good at this.

We are all dude. My grown kids call me dude and now that I'm a grandmother, people ask me what my grandma name will be, and I say, "probably Dude."

I remember getting in huge trouble as a child when I tried to express my great love for my Granny and the way it felt to be snuggled on her lap. I told her she was fat and in that word I meant wonderful, comforting, the very best and my mother scolded me and sent me to my room. Fat is love to kids.
