Usually, I would ignore such discussions, but RationallyDense is correct, and it would be a disservice to not elaborate on the facts of the matter in form of a thread and what the understanding on the subject from a german perspective is. Yes, the SS did allow volunteers to join the organisation.
While that was true initially, they started conscripting people in 1942. In fact, the Nuremberg tribunals, when declaring all members of the SS to be war criminals made an exception for conscripts. (Most from Eastern Europe)

Doing another. My mom's a hell of a baker, and so was her mom.
Shortbread cookies:
1 cup butter (room temperature)
1/2 cup icing sugar
2 cups flour
salt (a sprinkle is enough)
Knead 5 minutes. Roll to desired thickness and cut out. Bake in 325
degree oven until light brown (about 10 min)
