And like, while this game is known for its hallways, there is a big open zone section of the game full of side content!! It's just getting around is really tedious at your max speed of a light jog, and to my knowledge only this one area has (optional, needs to be unlocked) chocobo riding!

This is where the combat really shines. It abstracts RPG combat even further than usual, being about predicting the flow of battle and checkmating your enemies with efficient team composition. You'll keep finding new niches you want a paradigm for, but with only 6 slots you have to decide carefully.

There are six roles in the game. Commando pressures with physical attacks, Ravager staggers enemies with magic, Synergist buffs, Saboteur debuffs, Sentinel draws aggro and Medic heals/cures status effects. Not everyone is great in every role, and they can't do it all at once: enter the Paradigms.

Often the Datalog spells out the subtext of the story scenes if you're feeling really lost about what just happened, and the glossary elaborates on world details never explained otherwise. There's this incredible page about how a chocobo TV show led to their mass adoption by underprepared families.

You could play SH3 standalone, but I think it benefits a lot from having played SH1 first. Since both games are short, memorable and focus on different aspects of Silent Hill's horror, I think they go well together anyway. I'm glad I went through the trilogy; well worth it!

Now enjoy bread.

Heather is a great protagonist compared to the last two. She's defensive, sarcastic, and her motivations shift over the course of the story. She's allowed to joke, get angry, scared, repulsed. You won't be getting her to stick her hand in a slimed-up toilet, that's for sure.

The graphics have to be among the best on PS2, from the real-time character facial acting to the dramatic shadows cast by your flashlight. Just like in SH2, the noise filter crushes the darkness and softens the edges on everything. The mirror room was so cool--I was too shocked to take a screenshot.

Some lore in Caves of Qud. How do you figure someone could fake their death using a hologram? Surely they had to put his "body" to rest. Did people bury or cremate a hologram?

would pair nicely with some water soup

The darker, more mature storytelling and the graphical style make the game feel anachronistic to me. Putting aside the generation jump, the thought that these two games were released two years apart is pretty crazy! But these big changes were not without growing pains.

this thumbnail is extra funny for me specifically:
there's this comic a friend group and I (mostly just me at this point) occasionally add new pages to and the story involves this actor losing her role to her cat

I had this weird dream the other day where I was in the dream, but my perspective was watching myself like in a movie. Haven't been able to get it out of my head so I drew it

Quick update on the L3 sprint mapping annoyance in case you don't have controller paddles either: if you use Steam Input to map "long press B" to L3, you completely override the default dash which is kinda useless anyway. I've done a few runs with this change and haven't noticed any downsides yet!

My proudest non-standard art tool creation by far is this one I made in Armored Core 6, which I've used as my Discord avatar since I made it! That format really forced me to think about layers, oddly like painting a landscape.

Someday I'll have to actually replace it with a drawn avatar again...

Getting people to genuinely care in the moment made us care for a decade.

Started the Ace Attorney-style Zelda hack today, Hero of Law. It's quite ambitious and feels VERY close to its source material, both in humour and pacing!

With the assets and gameplay being all altered, I have no idea why they took on the extra challenge of making it a romhack but it's great.

I solved a word search puzzle in the form of...a PDF?! 12 Word Searches has really cool tricks up its sleeve leading to an overall puzzle that has layers to understand. It feels so cryptic at first until you finally fully complete one of the pages. Play it free here:

I attempted to co-write a comic with AI Dungeon. It was about an orphan picked up off the street by an eccentric art collecting duke. He was given a place to stay and asked to paint. And while his paintings were terrible because he had no experience, rich men would visit the duke and buy them. Why?
