Your writing doesn't have to be clever or witty in the first draft. The first draft is about getting the bones down. The essentials. You'll have time to add the clever/witty bits in the editing process. You have time to polish that gem to a mirror shine.

If you just want to entertain your audience, that's an excellent reason for writing. Not every writer needs to be some deep philosopher with hidden meanings in every line of text. Sometimes you can just write a story so that the reader has fun!

When you edit, look for 'loose threads'. These aren't necessarily plot holes, but rather ideas or concepts that are introduced and left hanging. Things you started, but never capitalized on. If they don't have a resolution your reader might get frustrated.

When you're just starting out, your writing will not be up to your own standards. That's okay! That's true of any hobby or career. It'd be weird if it was perfect the first time! Don't put yourself down. Learn from it and improve your work the next time.

Who remembers this guy? We used to listen to his broadcast every morning on the radio. I picked this one up at our local used book store.

If you decide to make up your own words or phrases in your fictional world, you can't expect your readers to know what they mean. You need to either directly explain it, or keep putting the word/phrase into an easy to understand context.

Learn a little bit about fashion. Just enough to describe things. Because it WILL come up. Unless you're writing a story entirely about naked people, you're going to have to describe their clothing. The more eloquent you can do that, the better.

Writers have a tendency to put ourselves down after we don't meet deadlines we set for ourselves. A lot of those deadlines are self-imposed, unreasonably strict, and silly. Good writing takes time, often more than we realize. So don't beat yourself up.

You don't have to write everything in chronological order. That's just a constraint. Being able to jump around in time can give you a metric ton of narrative freedom. The only caveat is that you need to make sure the reader doesn't get lost following it.

If you've got a bunch of old unfinished projects sitting on your hard drive from long ago, revisit them from time-to-time! Maybe that idea needed a little time to grow, or maybe you just weren't ready for it yet. It's a treasure trove of ideas!

One of the best editing tools you can master is the art of rephrasing. You're bound to repeat certain phrases over and over again, and learning to rephrase them while holding the same meaning will keep your work feeling fresh and new with every page.

Everyone plans their plots differently. Some people will create a red-string conspiracy board of all the major plot points and know every single leaf on every tree... and some folks just wing it. Neither is wrong. Just find what you feel comfortable with.

When in doubt, stand up and take a break. If a scene just isn't resonating with you, trying to force the scene to work often makes things works. Take a breather. Walk around the block. Give it a think before you take another swing at it. It'll help a lot.

Whenever your morale begins to slip and you start doubting if your writing has any value, remember that it has value to you. Even if no one else likes it (which is insanely unlikely, by the way), there's always one person who appreciates that it was made.

Always remember that listening to music can be the entire activity. Put on headphones. Blast it through speakers. Close your eyes and just listen.

Listening to music is not a background activity. It can be the entire journey, and it's worth the time.

Self-care when it comes to writing is more than just taking a break because you're tired. Your mental health is just as important. Make sure you relax your mind. Do something fun that takes your mind off writing, even if you consider writing fun too.

Know the stakes. Good characters, more often than not, have stakes in a scene, whether they realize it or not. What could they gain? What could they lose? If they don't have stakes... then what are they even doing there? The reader will be asking that.
