My team & I developed early warning systems for biodiversity in southern Africa over the last 18 years, but didn’t fully develop the academic partnerships needed to fill in the blanks like this. Grim news. An important and sad mechanism of mortality/ population decline.

New paper out! A study about the evolution of head scratching in birds. Birds scratch their heads in two ways: moving the leg under or over the wing (see pics below). We found body size and morphology explain some variation in scratching pattern. Also the ancestral state is not completely clear.

Here we examine how a simple behaviour, head scratching, has evolved in birds. There are some relatively complex changes going on that vary across clades, as demonstrated by @gallinaciega.bsky.social analyses.
