Why do courts overturn former leaders' corruption convictions?

Our new study shows that reversals are more likely when high courts are less independent than lower courts, creating space for political accommodation. 🧵

In less democratic settings, leaders tend to frame the convictions in personalistic terms rather than rules-based narratives or commitments to institutional reform. These personalist appeals resonate with the public, allowing ruling elites to capitalize on convictions. 3/4

Our key finding: In less democratic countries, convictions increase support for the government. In contrast, such events have negligible effects in more democratic settings. We show that this divergence stems from how governments respond to the convictions. 2/4
