For our final day of #25DaysOfFishmas, we're going full weird. Today's bizarre, lonely little fish is the needlebeard seadevil, Neoceratias spinifer. This prickly little lady is the only member of the family Neoceratiidae, nestling within the larger deep-sea anglefish order Ceratoidei.

Eh, they're not that terrifying, to me atleast, their jaws might look scary but they're too weak to actually do anything, plus, they look much better in life
This is a Loose Jaw. For a long time researchers thought the membrane on the bottom of its jaw was damaged in specimens but it turns out they don’t have a membrane there so they can snap the jaws faster. Nature is wild. This group is so fascinating and let’s face it, terrifying.

was randomly browsing r/megalophobia earlier only to see an image of stygiomedusa with a snorkeler at the surface, which is bonkers since it's a deep sea jelly. 🦑🧪

after a little digging, it came from this paper: doi.org/10.1590/S198...

Stomiids don't honestly get enough credit for how pretty they actually are
Aristostomias is a gorgeous mesopelagic predator that, despite its fierce appearance, only reaches ~20cm in length. It uses light in a number of ways - the nearly ubiquitous counterilluminating camouflage, communication but, most importantly, to hunt! #25DaysOfFishmas

Pelican eels are sweet little babies who inflate like balloons to capture tiny plankton. Gulper eels are eldritch predators which consume animals heavier than themselves and should've remained beyond the ken of man.

Super cool Ceratioid!,
Oneirodes?
Just returned from an incredible deep sea cruise with Dahiana Arcila and Ben Frable at Scripps - and we found a deep sea #anglerfish!!!!!!! 😱😱😱🤯🤯🤯
Dream come true since I was 6 years old 🥲. Stay tuned for more highlights of the catch (from a single midwater trawl at 600 m!).

Lovely cryptopsaras and Photostomias
Critters from the deep sea never cease to amaze me! They really are "textbook exemplars" of adaptation. Lanternfish are, of course, the coolest--but other critters are neat too! 🧵(3/3)
